About us

About WaterBoy

WaterBoy helps recipients take part in sport when fees, gear or other barriers get in the way. We work with recipients and whānau to find out what would help, then arrange support with schools, clubs and sponsors.

Purpose

Room to grow

Provide opportunities for recipients to grow through sport participation and personal development.

Mission

Community-led

Vision

Sport within reach

Participation in sport is achievable for every Kiwi.

Our story

How WaterBoy began

Thomas Nabbs founded WaterBoy to help recipients access sport and personal development opportunities.

The idea was straightforward: circumstances shouldn't decide whether someone gets to take part. Local sponsors and community relationships help turn that idea into practical support, including fees paid, gear supplied and connections with clubs.

Why taking part matters

For a recipient, taking part might mean joining a club for the first time, returning to an activity they enjoy or keeping up with training. It can also mean meeting friends and having something to look forward to each week. We start by listening to what the recipient wants to do and what would help them get there.

Part of Te Tamawai Trust

WaterBoy is run by Te Tamawai Trust, a Waikato charitable trust (Charities Services CC55070). The Trust also runs Taku Wairua, which delivers personal development programmes through Kura and Tupu.

Our staff coordinate the day-to-day work with recipients, whānau and community partners. Our board oversees the Trust's governance and direction.
